Hot Buns!

That got your attention, didn’t it??

Right out of the oven!

Now that the Boyz are on their own, I only bake bread once a week. Today I am using my favorite Amish Bread recipe for buns. Hubby likes them for sandwiches.
** Did you know you can make TWO loaves of bread for about $1.75 at home???**
I actually got this recipe from a Mennonite woman, living near Joes, Colorado.  Super easy and versatile. We use it for everything except sourdough, raisin bread and cinn rolls.  (~ For those I use an Italian Sweet Dough.)
This makes wonderful French loaves, baguettes, sliced bread, dinner rolls, hamburger and hotdog buns….
        2 Cup warm water
2/3 Cup sugar (you can also use Brown sugar or Honey- I’ve done both)
        2Tablespoons yeast (or two packages)
        1/4 Cup oil
        2 Tsp Baking POWDER
        1 tsp Salt
+/- 5 Cups flower (closer to plus)

In  bowl SIFT 4 cups flour/salt and Baking powder. Set aside.
In a Large bowl, Dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast on top and moisten. Let ‘poof’ about 15 minutes.

My niece’s first loaves!

Add oil. Slowly add in dry ingredients while stirring. Turn out onto floured (this is the rest of the flour) surface and knead until smooth and dough bounces backed when poked. (like the Pillsbury Dough Boy). Lightly oil and cover. Let rise in a warm place until double.
** If you are making bread, before oiling and covering, divide into TWO)**

Punch down. Shape into loaves or rolls. Let rise again. Bake 350 oven 35 min. for bread and about 20 for buns. Remove. cool on wire racks. Butter tops while warm.

~Enjoy~

How to be a good wife….

         I am A Good Wife…. Bwahahahahahah~ NOT…

It is not that I don’t try… But sometimes my intentions just don’t work out like I thought!
And on that note…. One of my favorite cookbooks is “The Brides Book” 1936
It is loaded with all manner of useful tips on being a GOOD WIFE… I also possess several others that read like novels… Here are some Tips for YOU:

“Your house-dress should be wide enough for action, but not so wide it will get in your way or make you trip on stairs or the ladder.”….. “A house-dress should also be able to achieve a ‘nipped-in’ hourglass definition when corralled by your crisp and clean apron.”

~Yeah- That one’s worked out really well for me.~ (a touch of sarcasm there)

                 “Never complain. Never show strain”
“Always wear the proper foundation garments

   Advice on keeping your man:
“The moment your world-weary office gladiator plants one wing-tipped foot through the vestibule, like an earthbound Tinkerbell, you shall flit around him until he wants for no more.~Delivering the high-ball, the newspaper, his slippers and the dinner with a SMILE and eyes overflowing with adoration.”
“You should also eagerly ask questions about his day, benching your own news until further notice”
                                (that one isn’t working
out to well for Hubby…)

So….How good of a wife are YOU?   I’d love to hear from you!

A Teeny Tiny Tech Victory!

Ok… Teeny Tiny for most of YOU.
For me… Not so much. This was a HUGE victory!
I managed to actually Find the “How-to” instructions on line.. (No calling the kidd-o this time and getting heckled) and make my own Etsy Banner!   We’ll just leave it at … I balk at anything outside of my comfort zone…

                                                             HA! So There!….
But really… I spent an afternoon poking around, looking at free and paid ‘ready made’ banners. And boy, did I find some pretty awesome ones! Sweetly Scrapped has a ton of them, PLUS that’s where I found the handy dandy “how to” links!
Free Pretty Things For You (which I have used a lot) and The Graphics Fairy and Star Sunflower Studio
I also wanted some Western fonts that I didn’t currently have. So I poked around some more and decided on the free fonts from Andy Nortnik because this site also some good free clipart.
Ultimately I ended up designing my own. Now that I know how… It’s easy

So… My new Etsy Shop “Katy’s Mercantile” will be open very, very soon! Keep an eye out!
